Associate Professor Matthew McGrail is the Head of Regional Training Hubs research at the University of Queensland’s Rural Clinical School. He joined UQ in 2017 and is based at the Rockhampton Clinical Unit. His work focuses on improving healthcare access for rural populations, with expertise spanning statistics, geography, rural health, and clinical research. He leads the Medical Graduate Cohort Longitudinal Tracking Study (UQ MediCoS) and chairs UQ’s Regional Medical Pathway research group.
Matthew holds a PhD in statistics (2008) and has contributed to three large NHMRC-funded RCTs published in The Lancet. His research emphasizes medical workforce distribution, healthcare policy, and training pathways. He co-leads two Centres of Research Excellence (CREs): one on medical workforce dynamics and another on rural primary health care access.
