Professor Bruce Chater, OAM, is the Mayne Professor and Head of the Mayne Academy of Rural and Remote Medicine, and Head of the Rural & Remote Medicine Clinical Unit at the University of Queensland's Medical School (Rural Clinical School). He holds a Bachelor (Honours) of Medicine from the University of Queensland and is available for PhD supervision.
His research focuses on rural health systems, medical education, workforce distribution, and rural hospital sustainability. Notable contributions include studies on rural medical training impacts, global health workforce pathways, and policy advocacy for rural healthcare equity. He has led projects such as the Limerick Declaration on Rural Health Care and contributed to systematic reviews on workforce retention.
Professor Chater has authored or co-authored over 50 publications since 1993, including works on rural clinical education, procedural grants programs, and community-engaged research. His articles emphasize actionable insights for rural healthcare policy globally.
He received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his contributions to rural health. Current supervision includes projects on CRP assays in rural settings and Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 healthcare strategy.
