Matthew Lauzon is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. His research focuses on European Intellectual History, Early Modern Europe, and Historiography. He holds a BA from Carleton University (1994), MA (1998), and PhD (2002) from Johns Hopkins University. His work examines language theories, cultural diplomacy, and colonial encounters in early modern Europe. Lauzon's major publication, *Signs of Light* (2010), analyzes linguistic communication theories in 17th-18th century France and Britain.
Current research includes 18th-century French historiography and French Middle East diplomacy. Courses taught span European Intellectual History, Early Modern France, and the French Revolution. His scholarship bridges cultural history with methodological debates in world history. Lauzon has contributed to interdisciplinary discussions on Enlightenment pedagogy and the intersection of language with imperial projects.
