Andrew Jainchill is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University, within the Faculty of Arts and Science. His research focuses on early modern Europe, particularly 18th-century France, the French Revolution, and political thought. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (2004) and a B.A. from Reed College (1996). Current projects include a study of French political thought in the early Enlightenment and an intellectual biography of the Marquis d’Argenson. He has held visiting professorships at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and a residential fellowship at the Institut d'études avancées de Paris (2013–14).
Research interests span the intersection of political theory, intellectual history, and revolutionary dynamics. His work examines how Enlightenment ideas influenced republican and liberal thought, with a focus on key figures like d’Argenson and Voltaire. Awards include a SSHRC Insight Grant (2014–2019) and a prestigious Paris-based fellowship.
Publications encompass monographs, edited volumes, and over a dozen articles, emphasizing critical editions of historical texts and analyses of political correspondences. He serves on editorial boards for Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment and has previously contributed to Modern Intellectual History and French Historical Studies.
Teaching includes courses on European history from 1650–1850, Old Regime France, and early modern political thought. His scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates in political philosophy, maintaining a strong focus on archival research and intellectual networks.
