Dr. Matthew L McDowell is a Lecturer in Sport Policy, Management, and International Development at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh. He holds a BA from The College of New Jersey and a PhD from the University of Glasgow. His academic roles include Special Issues Editor for the International Journal of the History of Sport and former editor of Northern Scotland. McDowell specializes in the history of Scottish, British, and Commonwealth sport, focusing on themes like small-island territories in sport, sport tourism, and the cultural politics of sporting events. He has organized major conferences such as the British Society of Sports History annual conferences and co-founded the Edinburgh Critical Studies in Sport research group.

Research Interests: McDowell’s work examines 'second-order' sporting events, sport in non-sovereign territories, curling, football history, and the patronage of sport by elites. Current projects include a book on surfing in the north of Scotland (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2024) and a study on the Island Games’ political role (Scottish Universities Press, 2028).
