Matthew J. Bietz is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Informatics at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California, Irvine. His work bridges Human-Computer Interaction, Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, and ethical data practices, with a strong focus on sociotechnical systems and collaborative knowledge work.
His research interests include:
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW)
- Sociotechnical systems and cyberinfrastructure
- Data sharing, privacy, and ethics in pervasive data
- Values in design and ethical implications of information systems
- Distributed collaborative work in scientific contexts
Bietz's recent publications reflect a growing emphasis on data ethics, privacy, and participatory models in health and citizen science. His work explores how values are embedded in technological systems and how collaborative infrastructures evolve through negotiation and adaptation. He employs primarily qualitative methods, including ethnography and interviews, to understand complex socio-technical phenomena.
Notable scientific contributions include leadership in the PERVADE project on pervasive data ethics, research on genomic databases as sites of value negotiation, and conceptual work on 'synergizing' as a core process in infrastructure design. He has secured funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
Bietz advises and teaches in capstone and research contexts, mentoring students in client-facing projects and ethical data practices. He is actively involved in research teams focused on data ethics, health informatics, and cyberinfrastructure sustainability.
