Dr. Katie Shilton is a Professor in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on technology and data ethics, including trustworthy AI, content moderation, and data governance. She leads the Ethics & Values in Design (EViD) Lab and is a co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) of the NSF/NIST-funded TRAILS Institute and UMD’s Values-Centered AI Initiative. She previously led the multi-campus PERVADE project on big data ethics.
Her research spans data privacy, sociotechnical cybersecurity, and information justice. She collaborates with the Center for Archival Futures (CAFe), Social Data Science Center (SoDa), and Tech Policy Research & Education Hub. Key projects include improving content moderation via human-in-the-loop machine learning and experiential data ethics education.
Her publications explore ethical challenges in AI, digital privacy, and participatory sensing. Recent work highlights gaps in volunteer content moderation support and ethical frameworks for posthumous data management. She advocates for values-driven design in technology systems.
Dr. Shilton has secured grants from NSF, NIST, and other institutions. Her teaching and mentorship emphasize ethics integration in computer science and information systems curricula.
