Dr Matthew Ingleby is a Lecturer in Victorian Literature at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), where he has served for seven years. Previously, he taught at University College London (UCL) for six years and completed his PhD there, contributing to the Leverhulme-funded 'Bloomsbury Project.' He holds a BA and M.St. from Magdalen College, Oxford, and a PhD from UCL. His research focuses on Victorian and early 20th-century literature, emphasizing spatial politics, urban and coastal spaces, and their cultural significance. Notably, he explores Bloomsbury's transformation from socio-economic marginality to cultural centrality through literary works.
Research Interests include London’s spatial dynamics, seaside resorts like Margate, and the political dimensions of railings. He serves on the editorial board of the London Journal and QMUL’s City Centre advisory board. Public engagement includes curated walking tours (e.g., Bloomsbury Festival, Courtauld Gallery collaborations) and a film, Dickens in a Crisis (2020), addressing Victorian literature’s relevance in contemporary crises.
Teaching spans undergraduate courses like Victorian Fictions and Cultures of Inequality, and postgraduate modules such as Victorian Voices. He supervises doctoral students in 19th-century literature and spatial politics.
Publications include monographs like Nineteenth-Century Fiction and the Production of Bloomsbury (2018) and edited volumes on coastal cultures and sufficiency. His essays appear in peer-reviewed journals and encyclopedias, addressing authors from Dickens to Woolf.
