Matthew Hepworth is a Professor and Chair (Wellcome Trust Career Development Awardee) at the University of Manchester's Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from Manchester and a PhD in immunology from the same institution. Postdoctoral training included roles at Humboldt University Berlin, University of Pennsylvania, and Weill Cornell Medical College.
His research focuses on innate immune pathways regulating inflammation in mucosal barriers (intestine/lungs), particularly innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in chronic inflammatory diseases like IBD and asthma. Key areas include ILC-mediated tissue repair, antigen presentation roles of ILCs, and translational studies identifying therapeutic targets.
Recent publications highlight metabolic regulation of immune cells, ILC-epithelial interactions, and radiation-induced toxicity mechanisms. He leads projects such as the Centre for Biological Timing (PI) and spatial-omics initiatives (Co-I).
His work contributes to UN SDGs related to good health and well-being. Supervised 5 students to date, with datasets available on ILC metabolic responses (PXD038786/PXD038792).
