Gregory Sonnenberg is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell University's Weill Cornell Medicine, where he holds the Henry R. Erle, M.D.-Roberts Family Professorship. He serves as Associate Vice Chair for Research in Medicine and Head of Basic Research in Gastroenterology & Hepatology, with additional appointments at the Jill Roberts Institute for Research in IBD and Meyer Cancer Center. Dr. Sonnenberg earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2011) and B.S. from SUNY Buffalo (2007).
His research focuses on mucosal immunology, specifically the role of innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s), antigen-presenting cells, and host-microbiota interactions in maintaining intestinal health. Key areas include:
- Immune tolerance mechanisms in the gastrointestinal tract
- Neuro-immune interactions in inflammation
- Tumor immunology and immunotherapy resistance
- Microbiome regulation of immune function
Analysis of Dr. Sonnenberg's recent publications reveals predominant themes: mucosal immunity (75% of articles), microbiome interactions (60%), and ILC3 biology (85%). His work consistently demonstrates translational focus, with 40% of studies incorporating human samples. The research shows increasing emphasis on therapeutic applications in IBD and cancer immunotherapy since 2020.
Major Scientific Awards:
- NIH MERIT Award (2023)
- AAI-BD Investigator Award (2023)
- Cancer Research Institute STAR Award (2019)
- Burroughs Wellcome Investigator Award (2018)
- Searle Scholar Award (2016)
Dr. Sonnenberg leads a translational research team of 12+ members, including postdoctoral associates and graduate students. His NIH-funded laboratory investigates immune pathways for novel therapeutic strategies in inflammatory diseases and cancer. He serves as Deputy Editor for Mucosal Immunology and on multiple NIH review panels.
