Matthew Giancarlo is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English at the University of Kentucky, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He also holds an affiliation with the Department of History. His primary research focuses on medieval English literature, Old English language and literature, and the intersection of literature with political and constitutional thought. Giancarlo teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on medieval literature, literary theory, and the history of the English language. He directs graduate committees for M.A. and Ph.D. programs in medieval and early modern literature.
Education: Ph.D. Yale University (1998), M.A. Duke University (1994), A.B. Cornell University (1991).
Research Interests include medieval constitutionalism, mirror-of-princes literature, Chaucerian studies, Old English poetry, and the history of philology. His major projects involve editing the works of fifteenth-century bureaucrat-poet Peter Idley and exploring popular constitutionalism in English literature from 1246–1541. Giancarlo co-edits Middle English for the Journal of English and Germanic Philology.
Recent publications analyze topics such as parliament and constitutionalism in medieval texts, political forms in Piers Plowman, and the poetics of governance in medieval poetry. His work spans textual criticism, historical context, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
He advises students on medieval literature topics and actively participates in academic organizations like Sigma Tau Delta. Giancarlo’s teaching emphasizes philological analysis and critical theory, reflecting his commitment to bridging historical and contemporary literary scholarship.
