Andrew Galloway is the James John Professor of Medieval Studies and Professor of English at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences, where he also serves as Interim Senior Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities. His academic career spans over three decades at Cornell, having joined as Assistant Professor in 1991, rising to Associate Professor in 1997, Professor in 2005, and assuming his current named professorship in 2019.
Galloway's research focuses on medieval English poetry (particularly 13th-15th centuries), Latin literature facing vernacular transformations, book history, ethical norms in medieval contexts, economic modes before capitalism, reception of classical literature, and women in literary contexts. He specializes in Piers Plowman, Chaucer, John Gower, historical writing, and fifteenth-century literature. His scholarly approach combines textual criticism with cultural and historical analysis to explore the literary and cultural contexts of medieval books.
His 15 most recent publications demonstrate consistent engagement with medieval literary theory, historical writing, multilingualism, and book history. The works reveal a progression from specific textual studies toward broader examinations of medieval economic thought, national identity formation, and the relationship between legal frameworks and literary expression in late medieval England.
