Ian Cornelius is an Associate Professor and Graduate Programs Director in the Department of English at Loyola University Chicago. He teaches courses in the Honors program, literary reading, poetry, Old English, the history of the English language, medieval and early modern literature, and the history of the book. His research focuses on medieval British literature, Old and Middle English, alliterative poetry, textual studies, and medieval literary education.
- Education: BA from Washington University in St. Louis; PhD from the University of Pennsylvania
His research interests include the intersection of poetics, book history, and textual editing, with a particular emphasis on works like Piers Plowman and Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy. Recent publications explore manuscript studies, medieval manuscripts at Loyola University Chicago, and the reconstruction of alliterative verse traditions. His work often bridges linguistic analysis, historical context, and literary interpretation.
Publications span journals like Journal of the Early Book Society and Manuscript Studies, as well as book chapters addressing medieval literary voices and Middle English lyrics. His 2017 monograph Reconstructing Alliterative Verse remains a key contribution to the study of medieval meter.
He advises graduate students in literary studies and directs the English graduate program at Loyola. His office is located in Crown Center 423, and he is active in curating Loyola’s medieval manuscript collections.
