Prof Ian Johnson is a Professor of Medieval Literature at the University of St Andrews' School of English, and a member of the Institute of Mediaeval Studies. He has held leadership roles such as Co-Director of the AHRC-funded 'Geographies of Orthodoxy' project (2007-2011) and Editor of The Mediaeval Journal and Forum for Modern Language Studies. His research focuses on Old and Middle English literature, medieval literary theory, and translation practices, with a particular emphasis on devotional texts and Geoffrey Chaucer's works. He has edited major volumes like The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism: Volume II and is currently researching translations of Boethius’s De consolatione philosophiae in late medieval Britain.
Johnson’s scholarly contributions include interdisciplinary projects, such as the EU-funded COST Action on religious transformation in late medieval Europe. His recent publications explore Boethius’s influence on medieval thought, fifteenth-century religious practices, and the legacy of Alastair Minnis in literary criticism. His work bridges textual analysis with historical context, emphasizing the interplay between scholastic methods and vernacular theology.
He has co-edited influential anthologies and serves on editorial boards, reflecting his commitment to advancing medieval studies. His current research on Boethius’s translations aims to illuminate intellectual exchanges between England and Scotland during the late medieval period.
