Matthew Frederick is an Associate Professor of Trumpet and Director of Bands at Emory & Henry College, where he also serves as Interim Director of The van Vlissingen Center for Career & Professional Development. He holds a D.M.A. in Trumpet Performance from The University of Texas, an M.Mu. from Auburn University, and a B.S. in Music Education from West Chester University.
His research focuses on Civil War Brass Bands, 19th-century brass instruments, and trumpet pedagogy. Upcoming research involves studying instruments at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History for the 'Treasures of the Smithsonian' project. Under his direction, Emory & Henry’s brass ensembles have achieved national recognition, including semi-finalist placements at the National Trumpet Competition and international tours to Germany, Austria, and China.
Dr. Frederick actively performs with the Symphony of the Mountains, Johnson City Symphony, and Barter Theater. He has published a book, *Trumpet Notes* (A.K. Brass Press), and contributed arrangements to the CD *Cheer Boys Cheer* (Moravian Music Foundation). His work includes lecturing on Civil War brass bands and serving as a clinician for school music programs.
