Matthew Evertson is a Professor of English at Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado. He is affiliated with the Communication Arts, Language & Literature Department with specific focus on English, Humanities and Diversity, and English Secondary Education.
His educational background includes a PhD in English/American Literature from Arizona State University (2003), an MA in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1993), and a BA in English from the same institution (1991).
Dr. Evertson's research focuses on regional influences upon the literature of the Great Plains and the Intermountain West, with special emphasis on Environmental Humanities and Indigenous Studies. His scholarship has evolved from American literary naturalism to ecocritical explorations of Western American writers, particularly voices from the Great Plains and Rockies. He is currently exploring ecological themes surrounding 'home' and 'homes' in works by Nebraska writers Willa Cather, Mari Sandoz, and Wright Morris. He also has interests in the role of liberal arts in higher education and interdisciplinary learning.
His publications demonstrate a strong focus on Western American literature, with particular attention to authors like Willa Cather, Jack London, J.D. Salinger, and Theodore Roosevelt. His work spans literary criticism, environmental humanities, and explorations of regional identity, with a consistent emphasis on the relationship between landscape, home, and narrative.
Dr. Evertson is actively involved in professional organizations and community initiatives. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Mari Sandoz Society and co-directs the Story Catcher Writing Workshop & Festival. He has held leadership positions including Chair of the Department of Justice Studies, Social Sciences and English at Chadron State College, Coordinator of the Essential Studies General Education Program, and Director of the Chadron State College Honors Program.
He teaches a range of courses including ENG 102 & 103 (Writing and Rhetoric), ENG 302 (Technical Writing), ENG 384-385 (American Literature), ENG 464 (Major American Authors), and senior seminars. He is also working on fiction writing set in the contemporary West during his spare time.
