Matthew Curran is a Research Assistant and Lecturer at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), affiliated with the Centre for Living Sustainability (CLS). His current research focuses on the effectiveness of knowledge exchange among stakeholders in freshwater biodiversity conservation, using Scottish Atlantic salmon and sea trout fisheries as case studies.
Matthew holds a BSc in Zoology/Marine Zoology (1997) from the University of Wales, Bangor, and an MSc in Biodiversity and Taxonomy (1998) from a joint program between Imperial College and the Natural History Museum, London. He is currently pursuing a PhD exploring knowledge exchange in conservation stakeholder interactions.
His research interests include knowledge exchange among conservation stakeholders, aquatic biodiversity management, sustainable resource conservation, and fisheries management. These areas reflect his commitment to bridging scientific research with practical conservation strategies.
Prior to his current roles, Matthew worked in education as a science teacher and head of department, and in civil service with the Scottish Government administering rural subsidies and conservation grants. His interdisciplinary background spans science education, policy, and applied research.
As part of the CLS, he collaborates with colleagues such as Professor Vicky Johnson and Dr. Philomena De Lima, contributing to the centre's research initiatives in sustainability and conservation.
