Professor Matthew Craven holds the position of Professor of Law at the School of Law, Gender and Media, SOAS University of London. His roles include PhD Programme Convenor (Terms 2 & 3), Director of Research & Enterprise including IKE Director, and Director of the Centre for the study of Colonialism, Empire and International Law. He earned qualifications of BA, LLM, PhD (Nottingham) and DipEd.
His research focuses on international law, human rights, and colonial legal systems. Specific interests include decolonization processes, Cold War legal frameworks, and the intersection of law and history. He supervises PhD students exploring topics such as global commons, self-determination, nuclear technology, and African Union constitutionalism.
Professor Craven’s academic leadership extends to directing interdisciplinary research centers and shaping curricula in environmental justice and international law. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary legal challenges, particularly in postcolonial contexts and global governance structures.
His publications span authored books, edited volumes, and over 30 articles addressing topics from Cold War legal architectures to colonial concessions. He contributes to debates on economic and social rights through both scholarly and applied legal perspectives.
