Matthew Craven is a Senior Fellow in the Melbourne Law Masters at Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne. Formerly, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and Professor of International Law at SOAS University of London. He is affiliated with Matrix Chambers, edits the London Review of International Law, and directs the Centre for the Study of Colonialism, Empire and International Law. His research focuses on international legal history, legal theory, and Cold War dynamics, with expertise in statehood, self-determination, treaty law, and human rights. He teaches International Law and Geopolitics in the Melbourne Law Masters program.
Research interests emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to decolonization and postcolonial international law frameworks. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary legal challenges, particularly in Cold War contexts. He leads the Centre for the Study of Colonialism, which explores the legacy of empire in modern legal systems.
