Matthew Cooper is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the UWA Medical School and affiliated with the UWA Centre for Child Health Research and The Kids Research Institute Australia. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from The University of Western Australia (2018) and multiple BSc degrees from Victoria University of Wellington (2007). As Manager of Biometrics at the Telethon Kids Institute since 2010, he leads biostatistical and data management teams supporting child health research across Western Australia.
His expertise spans biostatistics, clinical trials, and epidemiology with focus on chronic conditions like Type 1 diabetes, infectious diseases, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Notable projects include the ORIGINs study and WAACHS longitudinal follow-up. He specializes in data linkage methodologies and adaptive trial designs.
Recent research emphasizes population-level health outcomes, sibling health analysis in neurodevelopmental conditions, and innovations in cystic fibrosis treatment. Current projects include the Australian Research Consortium for Trans Youth and Children (ARCTYC) and a national Food Atlas initiative to improve food access monitoring.
Cooper's work aligns with UN SDG 3 (Good Health) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through his contributions to evidence-based healthcare and training future researchers. He has secured over $10M in grant funding for projects spanning pediatric nutrition, energy drink regulation, and food environment assessments.
