Matthew Campbell is a Professor of Human Metabolism and Integrative Physiology at the University of Sunderland. He holds honorary titles at leading institutions including the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (University of Cambridge) and Harvard University's Joslin Diabetes Centre. He chairs the University Research Ethics Committee and co-chairs the International Consortium for Insulin Resistance in Type 1 Diabetes. His research focuses on diabetes treatment, vascular complications, and lifestyle interventions, with over £2.3m in research funding and 150+ peer-reviewed publications.
Professor Campbell's work spans translational research from basic discovery to community application, emphasizing therapeutic interventions and prevention strategies. He advises global health bodies like the World Health Organization and NHS England. His recent roles include Vice-Chancellor's Research and Knowledge Exchange Fellow and co-chair of the REF29 Pilot Panel for Research Excellence Framework.
His research has contributed to international health policy, including guidelines on exercise-induced hypoglycaemia management. Current projects explore magnesium's role in diabetes complications and activity snacking benefits. He collaborates with industry leaders (e.g., Abbott Diabetes Care, Novo Nordisk) and promotes sustainable development goals (SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing).
