Matthew C H Tointon is an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol. His research focuses on the combinatorial, geometric, and probabilistic properties of groups, particularly at the interface of additive combinatorics and geometric group theory.
- Book: Introduction to Approximate Groups (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
His publications include works on polynomial growth in groups, percolation theory, nilpotent groups, and approximate subgroups. Collaborators include Romain Tessera, Tom Hutchcroft, and others.
Current PhD students under his supervision are Sarah Martin (expected 2027) and Merlin Haith Rowlatt (expected 2026). Former PhD student David Guo graduated in 2025.
Notable research outputs involve Sharp bounds in discrete geometry, Scaling limits of Cayley graphs, Probabilistic analysis of infinite groups, and Structural theorems for vertex-transitive graphs. Applications span Geometric group theory, Random walks, and Isoperimetric inequalities.
