Matthew Brown is a Professor of Natural Sciences at Flagler College, affiliated with the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Natural Sciences department. He holds a Ph.D. in Ocean Sciences from UC Santa Cruz (2009), an M.Sc. in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii (2003), and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Old Dominion University (1998). His research focuses on trace metal cycling in marine systems, particularly iron, copper, and other elements in estuaries and open oceans. He has conducted extensive fieldwork, including major oceanographic research cruises across global regions like Antarctica, the Gulf of Alaska, and the California Current.
Dr. Brown’s teaching portfolio includes courses such as Environmental Science, Physical Science, Oceanography, and Global Climate Change, with associated laboratory components. He has authored numerous journal articles in oceanographic research, served as a peer reviewer for Marine Chemistry, Journal of Geophysical Research, and others, and contributed to the US CLIVAR-CO₂ Repeat Hydrography Program. His work emphasizes the impact of atmospheric deposition on ocean biogeochemistry and the role of shelf processes in iron delivery to critical marine regions.
Dr. Brown has spent nearly 300 days at sea on research expeditions, including visits to Bermuda, Tahiti, New Zealand, Iceland, Chile, and Japan. He advises the Surf Club at Flagler College and maintains active collaborations in marine chemistry and trace metal studies. His postdoctoral research at UC Santa Cruz further strengthened his expertise in oceanographic methodologies.
