Kristen N. Buck is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Chemical Oceanography at the University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science. Her research focuses on trace metal biogeochemistry, particularly the role of organic ligands in iron and copper cycling in marine ecosystems. She leads the Buck Lab, which investigates metal complexation, bioavailability, and anthropogenic impacts on coastal environments. Dr. Buck co-chairs SCOR Working Group 130 on trace metal biogeochemistry and holds editorial roles in journals like *Limnology and Oceanography: Letters*.
Education: PhD in Ocean Sciences (University of California Santa Cruz, 2006), BS in Chemistry and BA in French (Pacific Lutheran University, 2001). Prior roles include Assistant Research Scientist at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (2009–2013) and Postdoctoral Fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2007–2009).
Her funded projects include NSF grants for GEOTRACES cruises and studies on ocean acidification’s effects on iron availability. She teaches courses such as *Chemical Oceanography* and *Metals and Microbes*, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Awards include the ASLO/TOS/AGU Best Student Poster Prize and C&H Montgomery Moore Fellowship.
- Key Research Themes: Iron and copper biogeochemistry, ligand-mediated metal transport, coastal pollution impacts.
- Current Projects: GEOTRACES North Atlantic/Pacific cruises, trace metal clean sampling systems, diatom carbon pump dynamics.
- Lab Leadership: SCOR WG130 co-chair, trace metal method development.
