Juan Santos Echeandía is a Tenured Scientist at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography's Oceanographic Center of Murcia, affiliated with the Marine Research Institute (IIM-CSIC). He holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Vigo and specializes in trace metals biogeochemistry in marine environments.
His research focuses on the chemical, biological, and physical processes affecting trace element distributions, particularly bioactive metals (iron, cobalt, copper) and toxic metals (lead) in both coastal and open ocean systems. He investigates how natural and anthropogenic environmental changes impact trace element cycles through field measurements and laboratory studies.
Santos Echeandía employs advanced analytical techniques including flow injection analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and voltammetric methods to study trace element speciation in seawater. His field work includes participation in major research cruises such as the Eddy Pump project in the Southern Ocean aboard the Polarstern research vessel.
He collaborates extensively with researchers from institutions including the University of the Balearic Islands and has worked on projects involving salt-marsh systems in the Tagus estuary. His laboratory work requires extreme contamination prevention measures, particularly when measuring trace iron concentrations aboard metal research vessels.
