Matthew Boonstra is an Associate Professor of Art - Sculpture at Eastern Illinois University (EIU), based in Charleston, Illinois. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Fine Arts from Michigan State University. His work focuses on sculpture, with exhibitions at prominent venues including the International Sculpture Center Grounds for Sculpture, Goldman-Kuenz Sculpture Park, and Mainsite Contemporary. He is a member of the International Sculpture Center and the College Art Association.
Boonstra teaches multiple sculpture courses at EIU, including foundational 3D design, advanced sculpture studio courses, and specialized studies in sculpture. His artistic practice emphasizes public and contemporary sculpture, with recognition through awards such as the Swope Award of Distinction and fellowships from Illinois and Oklahoma visual arts agencies.
His recent research output includes two 2024 exhibitions: 'Sculptures on the avenues' and 'University of Toronto Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit,' highlighting his engagement with public and site-specific installations. Beyond teaching, he maintains an active creative practice, with works featured in international locations like Brazil and exhibitions across the U.S.
