Matthew Boden is a Lecturer in Contemporary Music at the University of Tasmania's School of Creative Arts and Media. His roles include coordinating the Commercial Music Creation program and teaching jazz performance, music technology, and composition for media. Boden holds a PhD (2019), M.Mus (2003), and B.Mus (2001) from the University of Tasmania, with research focused on Tasmanian jazz interpretation and performance practices.
His research explores cultural importation, sociological impacts of musical traditions, and improvisation frameworks. Notable projects include the HyPe Development initiative (2018), creating multimedia installations blending live performance with digital art. Boden actively collaborates on screen music for Netflix productions like Clickbait, as well as films like Benji and TV series Bosch and Rockit.
Boden's performance career spans global engagements, including seven years in Paris. He has collaborated with artists such as Brian Jackson, Eddie Kirkland, and Meow Meow. His compositional work bridges jazz, film scores, and experimental media, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on music practice, sound engineering, and media composition. He supervises doctoral candidates researching spatial music systems, improvisation frameworks, and word painting through technology. Boden's work reflects a commitment to evolving the intersections between traditional music practices and modern media landscapes.
