Dr. Damien Kingston is a Lecturer in Contemporary Music at the University of Tasmania's School of Creative Arts and Media. He holds a PhD from the University of Tasmania (2018), an M.Mus from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2013), and a B.Mus from the same institution (2011). His research focuses on improvisation, composition, and the intersection of music with community and culture. Kingston is a guitarist, composer, and founder of Scratch Match Records, an improvised music label.
His teaching expertise spans jazz performance, research methodology, and contemporary music practices. He supervises doctoral candidates in areas like rhythmic improvisation, African American gospel influences, and music technology. Awards include first place in the 2016 Berlin Jazz & Blues Awards and a 2013 Keep an Eye European Jazz Awards finalist position.
Notable projects include the Hobart Jazz Jam Session initiative, fostering local improvisation communities, and collaborations in multidisciplinary performances like deCOI and The Insider Out. He has released six albums, with ABC Jazz and MONA commissions. His work emphasizes live improvisation’s societal impact and cross-disciplinary creative practices.
