Matthew Blake is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College since 2020. He holds appointments in pathological research and skeletal biology, with a focus on stem cell mechanisms in bone development and disease. His academic journey includes M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School (2012 and 2010) and B.S./M.S. from Yale University (2004).
His research centers on skeletal stem cell biology, with key investigations into
- lineage heterogeneity in bone formation
- signaling pathways (Wnt, TGFβ, ERK MAPK) in osteogenesis
- gene therapy approaches for metabolic bone diseases
- inter-organ communication (bone-brain, bone-adipose axes)
- AI integration in orthopedic research
Recent publications reveal trends in periosteal stem cell niche function, inflammatory osteoclastogenesis, and vertebral metastasis mechanisms. Funding includes major NIH grants and foundation support for projects like A Stem Cell Basis for NF1 Skeletal Manifestations and Discovery of Articular Cartilage Stem Cells.
Collaborative efforts span murine models, single-cell sequencing, and translational implant studies. His work bridges fundamental biology and clinical applications in orthopedics, osteoimmunology, and regenerative medicine.
