Matthew Bergin

Dr. Matthew Bergin is a Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle, affiliated with the School of Information and Physical Sciences and the College of Engineering, Science and Environment. He serves as a research associate in the Centre for Organic Electronics (COE) and as a support officer for the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF).

Dr. Bergin's research focuses on scanning helium microscopy (SHeM), mass spectrometry, and organic electronics. His work involves developing novel instrumentation for surface analysis, particularly in the areas of atomic diffraction and low-energy particle detection. His research spans condensed matter physics (50%) and atomic/molecular physics (50%), with applications in materials science and biosensor development. His PhD research specifically focused on instrumentation and contrast mechanisms in scanning helium microscopy, including the development of a high-efficiency electron ionization mass spectrometer.

His recent publications through 2025 demonstrate a strong focus on advancing scanning helium microscopy techniques, including instrumentation development, resolution standardization, and novel contrast mechanisms. His work bridges physics, engineering, and materials science, with particular emphasis on practical applications of fundamental research, including the use of UHV-compatible 3D printing for complex optical elements and the observation of diffraction contrast in surface imaging.

Dr. Bergin currently co-supervises one PhD student working on 'Scanning Helium Microscopy (SHeM) in the Study of Biological Samples.' His research involves extensive collaboration with multiple institutions and researchers, particularly within the Centre for Organic Electronics and with colleagues from his previous positions at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge and the Department of Chemistry at Swansea University.

His laboratory work centers around the Centre for Organic Electronics, where he contributes to instrumentation development and experimental design for advanced microscopy techniques, with applications in both fundamental physics research and practical sensor development.
