A/Professor Matthew Weyland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Monash University, where he also serves as the Titan Manager of the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy. He joined Monash in 2006 to help establish the facility and manage Australia's first aberration-corrected TEM, the FEI Titan3. His expertise includes atomic structure analysis, electron microscopy, nanomaterials, and tomography. Weyland holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and a BSc from Brunel University.
His research focuses on developing advanced TEM techniques such as quantitative electron microscopy (QEM), electron tomography, and 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM). These methods are applied to study materials across disciplines, including light alloys, semiconductors, and functional nanoparticles. He has led or contributed to multiple research projects, including the installation of Monash's UltraTEM instrument, which promises unprecedented resolution capabilities.
Weyland's work contributes to sustainable development goals through innovations in materials characterization. He has supervised numerous projects funded by organizations like the Australian Research Council. His academic profile includes over 128 publications, reflecting his contributions to materials science and microscopy advancements.
