Matthew Bampton is a Professor and Department Chair of Geography-Anthropology at the University of Southern Maine (USM), with an affiliation to the Muskie School of Public Service. He holds a Ph.D. from Clark University and has been teaching since 1992, focusing on Physical Geography, GIS, and Maine's geography. His research spans climate impacts on Arctic/Sub-Arctic communities, GIS education, and interdisciplinary projects in regions like Greenland, the Shetland Islands, and Guatemala. Notably, he served as a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh (2014-2015).
Research interests include GIS pedagogy, colonial environmental history, and collaborations on health studies (e.g., food insecurity, obesity) with institutions like Maine Medical Center. He has led NSF-funded REU programs and partnered with the University of Maine Climate Change Institute and global archaeology projects.
Publications span climate adaptation, coastal geology, and human rights mapping. His work integrates spatial technologies to address environmental and social challenges, emphasizing community resilience and historical contexts.
