Dr Matthew Baker serves as a Senior Lecturer in Human Biology and Human Nutrition at Bath Spa University's School of Sciences. With extensive teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate science programs including biochemistry, physiology, genetics, biomedical science, human nutrition, anatomy, and neuroscience, he has established himself as a versatile educator in health sciences.
His educational background includes a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry (1998) and a PhD in Biochemistry and Immunology (2001), both from the University of Bath. Prior to joining Bath Spa in December 2016, he held lecturing positions at Cardiff University (2006-2016) and the University of Bath (2001-2006).
Baker's research demonstrates a significant evolution from traditional biochemical and immunological studies toward interdisciplinary nature-health connections. His early work focused on protein structures, superantigens, and enzyme mechanisms, while his more recent research investigates the relationship between nature exposure and human health. Since joining Bath Spa, he has pioneered work on non-visual light perception, forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), and the impact of green spaces on mental and social wellbeing. His 2020 South West Creative Technology Network data fellowship enabled him to explore technological approaches for measuring nature-health connections, which has since expanded into creative interdisciplinary projects through his residence at the Studio in Bath.

- Residence at the Studio in Bath for creative interdisciplinary work
Baker's academic trajectory shows a clear progression from molecular biochemistry toward holistic health approaches integrating technology, creativity, and environmental science. His current projects focus on developing technological solutions to bring nature-health benefits to individuals with limited access to green spaces, representing a significant interdisciplinary shift in his research focus.
