Matthew B. Veldman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin. His research focuses on mechanisms of development, degeneration, and regeneration in the central nervous system, with an emphasis on optic nerve regeneration using zebrafish models. He has developed novel genetic tools like the MORF system for sparse cell labeling and contributed to Huntington's disease modeling.
- PhD: Neuroscience, University of Michigan (2007)
- Postdoc: UCLA laboratories of Shuo Lin (2014-2018) and William Yang
- Bachelor's: Biochemistry, University of Minnesota (1999)
Research interests include systems biology approaches for identifying regeneration pathways, CRISPR-based genetic screens, and translational applications of zebrafish models. Key areas include polyamine metabolomics in regeneration, spatial transcriptomics of retinal responses, and axon regeneration via SREBF2 regulation.
Recent work highlights metabolomics datasets for injury responses and intraocular axon regeneration models. Collaborations include the RReSTORe Consortium for vision restoration strategies.
