معرفی
Abigail Shoshana Hackam, Ph.D. is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Miami's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where she serves as Director of Laboratory Research and Associate Director of the Master's of Science in Vision Science and Investigative Ophthalmology program.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Human Genetics from Johns Hopkins University (1997)
- Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University (2003)
- Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (2000)
Dr. Hackam's research focuses on cellular signaling mechanisms underlying retinal homeostasis and response to injury. Her laboratory investigates Wnt signaling pathways in optic nerve regeneration, the role of innate immunity in retinal degenerations, and dietary/environmental influences on ocular disease. She has developed a Müller glia-photoreceptor culture system for drug discovery related to photoreceptor survival. Analysis of her recent publications shows a strong emphasis on diabetic retinopathy, retinal degeneration mechanisms, and axonal regeneration approaches.
Dr. Hackam serves on national and international grant review committees and actively promotes vision research through community outreach programs and mentoring early-career scientists. She teaches graduate-level courses including OPH630 (Ophthalmic Genetics), PIBS702, and NEU631 (Genetic Diseases of the Nervous System).
