Matthew B. Rettig, MD is a Professor in Residence in the Department of Medicine (Hematology/Oncology) and Department of Urology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He serves as Medical Director of the Prostate Cancer Program at the UCLA Institute of Urologic Oncology and Chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
Education:
- MD, Duke University School of Medicine, 1990
- Residency in Internal Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine, 1991-1993
- Internship in Internal Medicine, LAC+USC Medical Center, 1990-1991
- Fellowship in Internal Medicine, UCLA School of Medicine, 1993-1996
Dr. Rettig's research centers on genitourinary malignancies with dual clinical and laboratory emphases: clinical management of advanced prostate cancer and laboratory identification of biochemical targets for prostate/kidney cancer therapy. His work specifically addresses castration-resistant prostate cancer and clear cell renal cell carcinoma, focusing on molecular pathways like NF-kappaB and von Hippel-Lindau protein to develop novel treatment strategies for advanced disease stages.
Analysis of his 2003-2007 publications reveals consistent exploration of drug resistance mechanisms and targeted therapies in genitourinary cancers, with prominent themes including proteasome inhibition (bortezomib), EGFR signaling, viral oncology, and bone metastasis. His research bridges molecular biology and clinical applications through frequent investigation of TNF pathways, IL-6 expression, and apoptosis mechanisms.
Scientific awards:
- Super Doctors® Southern California 2024
- Super Doctors® Southern California 2025
- Los Angeles Magazine Top Doctors 2018
- American Society of Hematology Scholar Award
- Advanced Career Development Award, Department of Veterans Affairs
Dr. Rettig's laboratory receives national peer-reviewed funding supporting translational research into therapeutic targets for prostate and kidney cancer. He leads the CaRe Prostate clinical trial for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer and directs the Prostate Cancer Program's multidisciplinary team at UCLA's Institute of Urologic Oncology, integrating clinical care with cutting-edge research initiatives.
