Matthew Andres

Matthew Andres is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Law School and Director of the Veterans Legal Clinic, where he trains students to provide civil legal services to veterans in Michigan. He has held previous academic roles at the University of Illinois College of Law, where he founded the Elder Financial Justice Clinic, and Cooley Law School’s Family Law Assistance Project.

His research focuses on legal justice for vulnerable populations, particularly veterans and low-income consumers, and he has pioneered work in elder financial abuse and debt collection litigation reform. His scholarship often intersects with policy development and legislative advocacy.

The 2016 Retirement Research Foundation grant supported his interdisciplinary study on the nonmonetary impacts of legal representation for financially abused seniors. His article on this topic and his 2021 policy workshop on Michigan debt collections litigation highlight his commitment to systemic legal change.
