Matthew Allen serves as Executive Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities and Professor of Internet Studies at Edith Cowan University (ECU), a position he assumed in 2022 after leading Deakin University's School of Communication and Creative Arts (2013-2019). As Australia's first Professor of Internet Studies at Curtin University (1994-2022), he established the discipline's foundational academic department and co-edited two editions of the authoritative Handbook of Internet Research.
His educational background includes a Master of Arts from Murdoch University (1998), Doctor of Philosophy from The Australian National University (1991), and Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from The University of Sydney (1987). Allen's research examines the historical evolution and societal impacts of digital technologies, with seminal contributions to understanding Web 2.0's development, online drug communication patterns, and broadband policy frameworks in rural Australia.
Recent publications reveal consistent thematic threads: harm reduction narratives in digital drug discourse (2021), pandemic-era connectivity challenges (2020), and critical analyses of internet historiography. His work bridges technical infrastructure studies with sociological perspectives, particularly examining digital exclusion layers and socio-economic implications of broadband access in marginalized communities.
Allen's recognition includes the Australian Teaching and Learning Fellowship (2009) and Australian Award for University Teaching (2000). Professional leadership encompasses presidency of the Association of Internet Researchers (Life Member), directorship of the Internet Industry Association, and decade-long chairmanship of the Library Board of Western Australia.
