Professor Katya Johanson serves as Associate Dean (Creative Humanities) at Edith Cowan University (ECU)'s School of Arts and Humanities. Previously, she held professorial roles at Deakin University for 20 years, including leadership positions like Associate Dean (International and Engagement) and Higher Degree by Research Coordinator. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Arts from the University of Melbourne (2001), a Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing (RMIT, 1998), and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (Deakin, 2006).
Her research focuses on audiences in creative industries, cultural policy, publishing trends, and youth cultural consumption. She has led projects like the Australian Research Council-funded initiative on digital innovation in live performance (2025–2028). Key themes in her work include audience behavior analysis, arts evaluation ethics, and the intersection of digital and live performance.
Her publications explore topics ranging from opera production equity to rural infrastructure revitalization through art. Supervision roles include guiding PhD candidates on curatorial practices, digital scenography, and diasporic art practices. Grants include ARC Linkage funding, reflecting her commitment to bridging academic research with creative industry engagement.
