Matthew Akers

Matthew Akers is a Professor of Sound Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where he has held roles including Chair of Sound Design (2002-2005) and Associate Chair of Immersive Reality (2023-present). He earned an M.F.A. in Film and Video from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.S. in Design from Clemson University.

His research focuses on Sound Design, Immersive Reality, and Interactive Systems, with projects blending audiovisual performance, game development, and spatial audio installations. His recent works include collaborations with the Medeology Collective and interactive sound systems for corporate environments.

Matthew has also contributed to academic reviews of contemporary art and media, published in outlets such as Connect Savannah and The Chronicle. His professional background includes co-owning I.V. Specialists, Inc., where he managed clinical technology education and cleanroom design.
