Dr. Matt Varga serves as Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Higher Education Administration at the University of West Georgia. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy (2004, Christopher Newport University), M.S. in College Student Personnel (2007, University of Tennessee, Knoxville), and Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration (2012, University of Tennessee, Knoxville). His career includes developing the Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration and coordinating the College Student Affairs Master’s program. He focuses on modernizing graduate education to enhance student success through policy development and institutional innovation.
Research interests center on student well-being, substance use patterns in academia, and systemic support for marginalized populations like foster care students. He has published widely on topics such as stimulant misuse, opioid abuse, and institutional preparedness for vulnerable student groups. Teaching responsibilities include Research & Program Evaluation (CEPD-7152), Dissertation Guidance (HESA-9999), and Leadership in Diversity (CEPD-9151).
