Dr. Matt Tidmarsh is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Law within the Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on probation practices, organizational culture, and the sociology of professions, particularly examining the impacts of marketization and privatization in criminal justice systems.
Education: PhD in Criminal Justice Studies (University of Leeds, 2019), MSc in Criminology (Leeds Beckett University), and BA (Hons) in Sociology (Leeds Beckett University). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research Interests: Dr. Tidmarsh investigates probation service reforms, professional identity, community sanctions, and alternatives to custody. His work combines ethnographic methods to explore staff experiences and systemic changes, such as the post-2014 'Transforming Rehabilitation' reforms and their aftermath following re-nationalization in 2021.
Key Achievements: Winner of the 2019 Brian Williams Prize for his analysis of probation practice and marketization. He has secured grants from the ESRC and Research England, supporting projects on probation professionalism and governance.
Teaching: Lectures on penology, criminological theory, policing, and offender rehabilitation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His pedagogy integrates research insights to enhance student learning.
Current Projects: Expanding studies on probation governance, inter-professional collaboration, and co-produced rehabilitation strategies with offenders and communities. He mentors postgraduate researchers exploring probation, marketization, and professional sociology.
