Matt Sponheimer is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado. He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University (1999) and maintains an active research program focused on the ecology of early hominins and associated fauna in Africa, as well as the ecology of living mammals in South Africa.
His research interests span multiple areas of paleoanthropology and ecological studies. Dr. Sponheimer specializes in stable isotope analysis to reconstruct ancient diets and environments, with particular focus on hominin evolution and adaptation. His work combines field research in South Africa with laboratory analysis to better understand the relationship between early hominins and their environments. He has directed and co-directed several multi-disciplinary projects examining the ecology of living mammals in South Africa, which inform interpretations of the fossil record. His research encompasses dietary reconstruction, enamel diagenesis studies, and paleoenvironmental analysis using biochemical methods.
Dr. Sponheimer teaches several anthropology courses including ANTH 2010, ANTH 4110, ANTH 4160, ANTH 4180, and ANTH 5795. He actively mentors graduate students whose research covers taxonomy, ecology, ecomorphology, isotopic analysis, paleoecology, environmental reconstruction, paleontology, and nutritional and mechanical ecology. His students regularly conduct museum and field work in southern Africa.
His research has been supported by numerous field projects, including the Swartkrans Field School in South Africa, which provides opportunities for students to engage in archaeological fieldwork. Dr. Sponheimer has also been involved in organizing academic events such as public lectures on topics like 'Homo naledi and the evolution of the genus Homo.'
