Matt Montoya

Matt Montoya serves as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Screenwriting in the Department of Cinematic Arts at California State University, Long Beach's College of the Arts, where he maintains an office in CINE 208. His dual career bridges academia and the entertainment industry through active writing and production roles.

His academic credentials include:

• MFA in Writing for Screen & Television from the University of Southern California
• BA in Literature with emphasis in Creative Writing from the University of California Santa Cruz

Montoya's professional focus centers on screenwriting for television, with specialized expertise in legal drama and crime genres, while also pioneering new media formats like Snapchat series. His teaching methodology integrates industry practice with theoretical frameworks across screenwriting, film, and media studies courses.

He has received three Writers Guild of America Award nominations as part of the writing staff for CBS's THE GOOD WIFE and contributed to AppleTV+'s TRUTH BE TOLD. Current industry affiliations include IATSE and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), where he serves on the Latinx Writers Committee and participates in the ongoing writers' strike.

Montoya's instructional experience spans California State University, Long Beach; Pasadena City College; and USC's John Wells Division of Writing for Screen & Television, covering high school through university levels with emphasis on practical industry preparation.
