Matt Gaidica, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the Neurotech Hub at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. As an engineer-scientist, he bridges electrical engineering and neuroscience to develop innovative tools for understanding brain function under extreme conditions.
Dr. Gaidica's research focuses on how extreme environmental pressures affect neural physiology, with particular interest in Parkinson's disease, motor function, and sleep performance. His work spans multiple disciplines including electrophysiology, optogenetics, and bioastronautics, with applications for both high performers and clinical populations.
His publication record demonstrates a strong trajectory in neural circuit analysis, with recent work on implantable neurophysiology platforms that enable research in free-living animals. His research has been recognized with prestigious awards including the NASA-TRISH Postdoctoral Fellowship and Forbes 30 Under 30 in Science.
- Commissioned Officer (2LT), U.S. Air Force (2022)
- NASA-TRISH Postdoctoral Fellowship/Academy of Bioastronautics (2020)
- Forbes 30 Under 30, Science (2016)
- Kettering University Distinguished Alumni Award (2013)
As Director of the Neurotech Hub, Dr. Gaidica serves as a collaborator and investigator on neuroscience innovation projects while building tools to accelerate research progress. His background in electrical engineering informs his approach to developing novel methodologies for neural recording and analysis.
