Matt Egan

Professor Matt Egan is a Professor of Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where he is affiliated with the Department of Public Health, Environments and Society within the Faculty of Public Health and Policy. His work is closely connected to the School of Public Health Research at LSHTM (SPHR@L), which is part of the wider NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) comprising eight UK universities and research centers of excellence.

Dr. Egan's educational background includes a PhD on the history of special needs education in Scotland from the University of Glasgow. Prior to his current position, he worked as a senior investigator scientist at MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow, and as a senior public health advisor at NHS Health Scotland.

Professor Egan's research focuses on generating evidence to inform public health policy and practice, with particular emphasis on health inequalities, alcohol policy, housing, urban regeneration, community empowerment, and local government. His methodological expertise includes evaluations of natural experiments, research synthesis, and systems thinking to understand complex public health interventions through mixed methods approaches and co-produced research with stakeholders.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on alcohol licensing policies, food environments, health inequalities, and place-based interventions. His work consistently examines how local policies affect health determinants, employing mixed methods to evaluate complex public health interventions in real-world settings.

Professor Egan currently co-leads the NIHR SPHR Healthy Places Healthy Planet Programme and serves as joint Principal Investigator for a NIHR PHR funded project evaluating selective licensing schemes for private rented housing in England. He is also the LSHTM lead on two major multi-center collaborations: the UKRI Population Health Improvement Network of Clusters and the NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration led by Borough of Ealing.

As an educator, Professor Egan co-organizes the "Reviewing the Literature" module, tutors in "Issues in Public Health," and supervises MSc Public Health summer projects. He also contributes to external teaching activities, including a University of Greenwich short course on private rented housing.
