Matt Dickson is Professor of Economic and Social Policy at the University of Bath's Institute for Policy Research (IPR), where he leads the widening participation in higher education research program. His research examines earnings returns to degrees, further education progression, and health impacts on educational outcomes. Previously at University College Dublin and University of Bristol, he earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Warwick.
His research focuses on:
- Microeconometric analysis of large-scale datasets including Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO)
- Causal effects of education on earnings, employment, and health outcomes
- Intergenerational educational transmission and social mobility
Dickson's publications demonstrate consistent focus on education economics, labor markets, and policy evaluation utilizing advanced methodologies like Mendelian randomization and longitudinal analysis across diverse datasets including UK Biobank and ALSPAC cohort data.
Awards include:
- Prize Research Fellowship
- Research Fellowship at IZA (Institute of Labor Economics)
He currently serves on editorial boards of Journal of Education and Work and leads multiple ESRC-funded projects including evaluations of Opportunity Areas and Raising Participation Age policies. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing inequality.
