Dr Matt Carew is a Research Fellow and Teaching Associate at Monash University, affiliated with the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub. He is based in the School of Media, Film and Journalism within the Faculty of Arts. His work bridges research and teaching in climate change communication, with a focus on equipping trusted public figures such as radio broadcasters and weather presenters with communication strategies to engage local communities.
His research interests include:
- Climate change communication
- Climate change education
- Science communication pedagogy
- Public engagement with environmental issues
- Role of trusted messengers in science communication
- Impact of social interactions on learning in fieldwork contexts
His 2020 publication explores how social dynamics in science fieldwork enhance student cognition and well-being, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach combining education, psychology, and environmental science. This work contributes to broader efforts in improving science education and public understanding of climate change.
Dr Carew contributes to Monash University’s educational mission through teaching in the Climate Change Communication unit (ATS2324) and experiential learning programs such as the Monash Innovation Guarantee (MIG) and Research, Experimentation and Discovery (RED), in collaboration with the Wonderlab research community. He has participated in academic activities, including the International Conference on Environment & Human Health in 2022.
His research supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:

He is actively engaged in research, teaching, and community-focused communication initiatives with no indication of part-time status, retirement, or former staff designation.
