Mats Kirkaune is a Research Fellow at the Rosseland Centre for Solar Physics, University of Oslo. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Nordic Radio and Millimeter Astronomy Network (NoRMA). His research focuses on solar and stellar physics, with emphasis on activity mechanisms in main sequence stars and radio/millimeter wavelength observations. He uses facilities like ALMA and contributes to the development of the AtLAST telescope.
Education: B.Sc. in Physics & Astronomy (UiO, 2018-2021); M.Sc. in Astronomy (UiO, 2021-2023) with a thesis on 'Searching for stellar emission in the sub-THz bands', supervised by Prof. Sven Wedemeyer and Dr. Atul Mohan. Teaching: TA for AST2000 'Introduction to Astrophysics' (2024).
Publications include a 2024 study on AtLAST's solar/stellar science potential. His work bridges observational astronomy with instrument design, targeting sub-THz and millimeter regimes for stellar emission detection. Collaborates internationally with over 30 researchers on telescope development projects.
