Mats Eriksson is a Professor of Nursing Science at Örebro University, affiliated with the School of Health Sciences and the Department of Nursing Science. His research focuses on neonatal and pediatric pain management, particularly in critically ill newborns and children. He leads the international PEARL (Pain in Early Life) research group and the EUROPAIN study, examining pain relief practices across Europe.
Born in 1959, Eriksson earned his PhD in Medicine at Linköping University (2004) and became a Docent (2011) and Professor (2015) at Örebro University. His work integrates clinical practice and research, emphasizing family-centered care and non-pharmacological interventions like skin-to-skin contact and lullaby singing to alleviate pain.
Key projects include SANNI (Safe analgesia in neonatal intensive care), LISAN (Life Situation for Children with Narcolepsy), and Just-in-TIME (dance/yoga for adolescent abdominal pain). He collaborates globally with teams in the Nordic countries, Canada, the U.S., and Brazil.
Eriksson serves on the Scientific Council of the Swedish National Board of Health, chairs the SANNI project, and advises journals like Pediatric and Neonatal Pain. He supervises four PhD students and advocates for evidence-based nursing practices.
